What the infrastructure bill means for Maryland
Congress passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is decades in the making. It includes $973 billion over five years, including $550 billion in new investments for all modes of transportation, water, power, broadband, cybersecurity, energy, environmental remediation, resilience and more. Let’s take a look at some of what Maryland can expect from the bill:
Approximately $4.1 billion for highway aid and $409 million for bridge replacement and repairs
An estimated $1.7 billion over the next five years to improve public transit systems across the state
At least $200 million for Maryland to expand access to high-speed broadband in underserved areas
An extension of the Emergency Broadband Benefit program, which discounts monthly broadband bills for low-income households
$844 million over five years to improve water infrastructure across the state to ensure clean, safe drinking water
$238 million for the health and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay
$158 million for Maryland airports and $63 million for electric vehicle charging stations
At least $15.9 million to prevent cyberattacks
It’s important to remember that Rep. Andy Harris voted against investing in Maryland (again) while all of the state’s Congressmen and Senators voted for the bill.
America is getting back to work
This week, we learned some promising news about the economy: We’ve had six consecutive weeks of decline in new unemployment claims. The number of workers losing their jobs is at the lowest level since the pandemic began. Unemployment claims are down 70% since January, when President Biden took office — and they are falling at the fastest rate since the 1950s.
Passing President Biden’s Build Back Better plan is critical to continuing our recovery. The Build Back Better Framework will create good-paying jobs and directly lower costs for families by providing more affordable health coverage, child care, elder care, energy, and prescription drugs — all without raising taxes on those making less than $400,000 or adding to the federal debt.
The fight against COVID-19: New FDA authorization
We have reached a turning point in our battle against COVID-19: After rigorous review, the CDC and FDA have authorized a safe, effective vaccine for children ages 5-11. It will allow parents to end months of anxious worrying about their kids and is a major step forward in our fight to defeat the virus.
The Biden-Harris administration has already secured enough supply for every child in America. Kids will be able to get a vaccine at one of tens of thousands of locations, including pharmacies, pediatricians’ offices, schools and more.
Visit vaccines.gov to find a vaccine for you or for a loved one near you.
Get covered at HealthCare.gov
The open enrollment period on HealthCare.gov is now open. If you or someone you know needs coverage — or if you’d like to change or renew your plan — make sure to apply before the open enrollment period ends on Dec. 15.
