With Gov. Larry Hogan’s victory in the Republican primary, the race for Senate in Maryland, a seat that has been held by a Democrat since 1977, has become competitive. Fortunately, in Angela Alsobrooks we have a strong Democratic candidate. Nevertheless, amidst the stories of Hogan’s favorable ratings and likeable personality, and his own claims of independence from his party, it’s important to remember what he actually represents and what a Hogan victory would mean for Maryland and for the United States.
Let’s look first at his legacy. Since he had few legislative accomplishments in his two terms, we’re forced to look at what he blocked with his many vetoes:
Gov. Hogan presided over the hollowing out of state government, reducing staff to skeleton crew levels and compromising the workforce that is charged with executing the essential functions of state government;
He vetoed essential and beneficial public transit programs in favor of the continued expansion of highways;
Vetoed a provision to grant partially paid parental leave to employees;
Blocked mandatory background checks on private gun purchases;
Vetoed the increase in the state minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Hogan does not support workers, parents, or the environment, and aligns more closely with his Republican colleagues than his “I’ll fight for the people of Maryland” plug implies. No you won’t, Larry; the second you’re in DC, you’ll fall into line to fight for your Party’s dark money overlords and leave Maryland’s people in the dust.
Most critical however, is the fact that a Hogan victory would put the already razor-thin Democratic majority in the Senate in jeopardy, potentially handing control of the Senate to today’s broken and dysfunctional Republicans. They would set the agenda, control which legislation gets to the floor, and hand committee chairmanships to the likes of anti-choice, anti-worker, and pro-billionaire Senators Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Tommy Tuberville.
Make no mistake - a vote for Larry is a vote for Mitch. A vote for Larry is a vote for Ted. A vote for Larry is a vote for Rand. And a vote for Larry is a vote for Tommy. The solution? Vote for Angela.
And make sure that you talk about the implications of this election with everyone you know.
The Harford County Democratic Central Committee will be supporting Angela Alsobrooks in every way possible, and we need your help this fall to re-elect Joe Biden and beat Larry Hogan.
