Apply to be Appointed to the Board of Education of Harford County
Plus: The HCDCC meeting this month will be on Jan. 25 at the McFaul Activities Center
Dear Harford Democrats,
Applications for the Board of Education are due on Friday, Jan. 13.
Apply here: https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/3519/Board-of-Education-of-Harford-County
In contrast to previous years, when the Governor would appoint members to the board, this year changes to the law mean that the County Executive gets to appoint those members. He will select from the pool of applicants that we, the citizens of Harford County provide, and he has shown us whom he serves.
In the past two years, I and others have witnessed emerging far-right, nationalist, and extremist activity in those meetings. Our board currently has at least two members affiliated with the extremist group Moms for Liberty. In 2021, I was present at a meeting that was cleared out due to extremist activity, and along with other advocates for reasoned, science-based, non-ideological policies, walked through a gauntlet of Proud Boys and other radical agitators to my car. These radical elements form the political base of our County Executive's party.
I cannot stress enough how important providing as many qualified and reasonable candidates is to this selection process. I encourage anyone who values good schools, fact- and science- based education programs, and policies that value and protect the health and safety of all of our students, and particularly those from historically disadvantaged or marginalized groups to apply. They need you more now than ever.
The HCDCC urges you to put your name into the mix of applicants. You will not regret doing so.
Sincerely,
Sandy Gibbons
Chair, Harford County Democratic Central Committee
