A Note from the Committee on President Biden’s Decision
Earlier this week, we learned that President Biden ended his reelection bid and that he and a majority of delegates have now pledged support to Vice President Kamala Harris. Maryland’s delegation to the 2024 Democratic National Committee has unanimously endorsed her candidacy. We wish President Biden the very best, and thank him for his many years of public service on our behalf. We are grateful to have had him as our President over the past 3 ½ years, in which he guided our nation through COVID and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, solidified our international partnerships, and strengthened democracy abroad and at home. He will be regarded as one of the most consequential presidents in American history.
Our Party will formally nominate our candidate in August, initially via a roll-call vote during the first week of August, and then again at the Democratic National Convention. The double vote is necessary to make sure that no Republican electoral shenanigans will prevent her from being on the ballot, particularly in Ohio. Given that a majority of delegates have pledged to support Vice President Harris, it appears almost certain that she has secured the nomination, and we look forward to working together to get her elected!
Kamala Harris’ contributions to the current administration are numerous, but most notably, she:
Cast the largest number of tie-breaking votes in the history of the Senate
Conducted more than a dozen foreign trips, traveling to more than 19 countries, and meeting with more than 150 world leaders to strengthen critical global alliances
Worked with Congress to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure bill, capped out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35/month for seniors, and the first meaningful gun safety legislation in more than 30 years
Became the Administration’s champion of women’s reproductive rights
Her achievements and dedication to advancing our nation stand in stark contrast to those of her opponent.
Donald Trump remains a convicted felon, a pathological liar, and a promoter of insurrection
He remains the same candidate who has courted the favor of dictators and promised to become one “on day one”
He remains in the thrall of his ultra-conservative billionaire donors and their vast sums of campaign cash
He appointed the most radically conservative justices to the Federal bench and to the Supreme Court, and if elected, would solidify conservative majorities for generations to come
He was the king of complacency during the initial stages of the COVID pandemic, and there’s no reason to believe he would respond any differently to future disasters
He has promised to gut the Federal civil service and replace tens of thousands of dedicated Federal employees with pre-vetted political appointees
If you want to remind yourself of what we are really up against, go read the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. Or the Wikipedia summary article if you don’t want to read all 900+ pages of ultraconservative vision-setting for a potential second Trump presidency.
We are voting for our futures, and for the generations that will follow us.
Will we live in a nation in which women have rights to what happens with their bodies?
Will we live in a country that can regulate businesses out of the excesses of corporate greed?
Will we live in a nation that protects its environment and secures a livable planet?
Will we be able to access affordable healthcare?
We are excited to help elect Kamala Harris to the presidency and Angela Alsobrooks to the Senate. They will protect our rights, our freedoms, and our lives. We encourage you to share this message widely and to volunteer to help win in November!
