A Note After the 2024 Election
Congratulations to Senator-elect Angela Alsobrooks and some thoughts on the future
As we wrap up the 2024 election season, on behalf of the Democratic Party of Harford County, I want to thank our volunteers who knocked more than 2,000 doors, made approximately 3,000 phone calls, wrote more than 4,000 postcards, delivered yard signs, waved signs, monitored polls, organized neighborhoods, and did countless other things to move the needle on this election. And as a result of that work, Angela Alsobrooks is our first Black Senator in Maryland, and you helped make that happen. So let’s congratulate Senator-elect Alsobrooks on her resounding and historic victory!

In other good news, Issue 1 - amending Maryland’s constitution to protect abortion rights - passed resoundingly. Indeed, 66% of voters in Harford County voted in favor of this measure, highlighting the importance the electorate attaches to reproductive rights.
Obviously most of us are thinking about the other outcome of yesterday’s election. It clearly was not what we were hoping for, and we are all too familiar with the probable consequences of that choice. While it will doubtless be a difficult road ahead, we have legislators, lawyers, organizations, community advocates, and people of all walks of life who in their everyday actions reveal the better angels of America’s nature.
And in the meantime, we still have free and fair elections in Maryland and in Harford County. We owe our Board of Elections a tremendous debt of gratitude for their efforts, and particular thanks goes to Stephanie Taylor, Harford County’s Election Director, for running a very tight, fair, and accurate ship. Our Board is 3-2 Democrats, and as long as we retain the Governor’s seat, we will preserve that majority.
Likewise, we will still keep our Democratic majorities in both houses in the State Legislature in Annapolis. Our Democratic legislators, including Delegates Andre and Steve Johnson and Senator Mary Dulany James will be working to advance bills that align with Democratic values that will directly benefit all of the voters of Harford County.
While many will be taking a deserved rest from direct election work, your Party will be laying the groundwork for the gubernatorial elections in 2026. We will work to recruit, train, and support our candidates, and with your help will build a community- and neighborhood-based organization that will help them contact voters when it is time to run openly.
Let us take some time to rest, celebrate our victories, and regroup for the inevitable challenges ahead. We, as Democrats, can be proud of our values, our ideas, and our commitment to lift the fortunes of all the residents of our beloved Harford County, and indeed, of all Americans. Thank you again for your work - it is the light that we shine together that will pierce the darkness.
