Good News for Democrats!
Now is the time to run for office in Harford County.

Amidst the seemingly endless stream of headlines (to say nothing of social media doom-posts) that oscillate somewhere between bad news and paroxysms of apocalyptic despair, it’s important to recognize that things are actually looking up for Democrats across the country. Notably, some spectacular results in special elections should make it abundantly clear that those who foretell the imminent demise of the Democratic Party might want to reconsider their prophecies. Some notable examples, shamelessly stolen from the Maryland Democratic Party’s post linked above:
This week, Democrat Catelin Drey flipped Iowa Senate District 1, breaking the GOP supermajority in the state Senate. Trump won this district by 11 points in 2024. Now it is represented by a Democrat.
Connecticut: Dan Gaiewski overperformed by 16 points
Delaware: Dan Cruce overperformed by 10
Florida: Gay Valimont overperformed by 23 points in a Trump +37 district, flipping Pensacola for the first time in decades
Iowa: Mike Zimmer flipped a Trump +21 district by overperforming 25 points
Maine: Sean Faircloth overperformed by 18 points
Minnesota: Doron Clark won 91 to 9, a 14-point overperformance
Nebraska: John Ewing Jr. defeated the longest-serving GOP-aligned mayor in the country in Omaha
Pennsylvania: James Malone won a state Senate seat in Lancaster County, the first Democrat there since 1979
Rhode Island: Stefano Famiglietti won with 80% of the vote, a 56-point overperformance
South Carolina: Keishan Scott overperformed by 36 points, taking more than 70% of the vote
Wisconsin: Susan Crawford beat an Elon Musk backed Republican in a high-stakes Supreme Court race
Virginia: Democrats Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh both won their races by a commanding 62 to 38 margin
If you think this can’t happen here in Harford County, you’d be wrong. It’s happening everywhere. Democrats have already filed to contest Republican-held seats, and we expect more. For example, Anthony Lyon has filed in Maryland House District 34B, and Jessica Ryley Hammond has filed to run for County Council District C. And two candidates (Dan Schwartz and George Walish) have put their names in to run against Rep. Andy Harris, who is now well past his self-imposed six-term expiration date.
If there were ever a time to run, it is now. The HCDCC and the Maryland Democratic Party are looking for candidates up and down the ballot, and aim to Contest Every Seat. We rely on you - the engaged and caring citizens of Harford County - to step up and take a chance. Let us know on our Google form at https://tinyurl.com/5f7k53dz
